NMC warns students against non-compliant foreign medical schools

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification urging medical aspirants to exercise caution while seeking admission in foreign medical colleges. The notice highlights that students must ensure that the institution adheres to the guidelines outlined in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licensing Regulations (FMGL), 2021.

The NMC highlighted that discrepancies in course duration, medium of teaching, curriculum, clinical training or internship may result in disqualification from registration to practice medicine in India. In such cases, the responsibility will lie solely with the candidate, the commission said.

Despite previous advisories, the NMC noted that some students continue to enroll in private medical institutions abroad that do not meet prescribed standards. These institutions often follow training programs and protocols that do not match the NMC regulations applicable in India.

The FMGL Regulations 2021, officially notified on November 18, 2021, define mandatory criteria regarding the duration of studies, language of instruction, curriculum and clinical training. Compliance with these criteria is essential for Indian medical graduates from foreign institutions to obtain registration to practice allopathy in the country.

The commission once again urged prospective medical students to carefully verify compliance with these regulations before obtaining admission to a foreign medical institution.
