New neuromorphic camera technology could allow drones to navigate areas where GPS fails

The satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) forms the basis of most modern geolocation systems. However, it is limited by certain factors.

To combat this, two companies are now joining forces to create a navigation system for drones without GPS, using neuromorphic sensing technology, or an event camera fused with an inertial navigation system (INS).

NILEQ, a subsidiary of British missile manufacturer MBDA based in Bristol, United Kingdom, manufactures a low-power visual navigation system based on neuromorphic cameras. They have partnered with Advanced Navigation, a Sydney, Australia, company that will combine its fiber-optic INS technology with neuromorphic cameras to create a positioning system that allows low-cost drones to navigate without relying on GPS.

Both visual and INS have their limitations. INS are expensive and use sensors to track a vehicle’s location from a known starting point. However, small measurement errors can occur and accumulate over time, causing positioning accuracy to drift. Similarly, visual navigation systems use cameras to monitor the ground beneath an aircraft to pinpoint its position, but this requires considerable data resources that make it unsuitable for smaller, less expensive drones.

NILEQ claims that its algorithms process the camera output in real time to create the terrain fingerprint map for the particular area flown by the drone, which is then compared to a database of generated terrain fingerprints. from satellite images stored on itself. Creating fingerprints compresses the data, “this means that the size of the database loaded on the host platform is insignificant and searching in real time requires minimal calculations,” explains Phil Houghton, head of fingerprinting. future design at MBDA.
