Welsh Conservatives meet to discuss Andrew RT Davies’ leadership

Welsh Conservative members of the Senedd met on Thursday afternoon to discuss the future of Andrew RT Davies’ leadership, BBC Wales has learned.

He has faced public and private criticism from some of his member states over the past six months, in part because of some of his social media posts.

Davies was criticized by a Muslim group over the availability of non-halal meat in schools and was reprimanded by members of his own party for a message at a summer party questioning the future of the Senedd .

It is unclear whether the Member States group wants Davies to step down or simply wants to express its concerns.

Davies has been the leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd for most of the past 13 years.

He was first elected in 2011. After resigning in 2018, he returned unopposed in 2021 following the resignation of Paul Davies.

Davies has been under pressure since the summer due to concerns raised internally over his social media account on X.

A Muslim group accused Davies of “An Islamophobic racial struggle” after writing about claims that non-halal meat was not available at a Vale of Glamorgan school.

The school said that was inaccurate.

The Senedd MP for South Wales Central also sparked a row over devolution when he told X he asked people at an agricultural show whether they thought the Senedd should be abolished or not.

Davies said he was simply asking for people’s opinions, but his predecessor, Lord Bourne, warned the party against “impasse”.

There have also been concerns within the party over its handling of the conduct of Conservative MP Laura Anne Jones.

Jones apologized after learning she had used a racist insult in a WhatsApp chat. It is also the subject of a police investigate his spending – allegations she denies.

Jones was not suspended as a Conservative MP, but was removed from her role as spokesperson.
