Originally released in September last year, tabletop RPG Wilderfeast is now available to order in physical and PDF form. Combining elements of the Monster Hunter video game series with the manga/anime Delicious in Dungeon, this is a game about tracking down giant magical creatures, killing them in tense battles, and then preparing them for a banquet.

I was a backer and received an early PDF copy, and while I haven’t had a chance to run or play the game yet, it’s very impressive after a full playthrough. Gorgeous art and layout frame some really clever rules and an inviting setting. The tone is a bit warmer than that of Monster Hunter: your group is supposed to try to live in balance with nature, and your hunts are mercy killings, eliminating creatures that have been corrupted by an incurable, maddening curse. Chopping and cooking them is a mark of respect, you see.

Your characters also end up becoming monsters. Each time you eat a beast, you can gain some of its traits and powers. If you scoff down a plate of giant frog legs, you might have webbed toes, a camouflage complexion, or bulging thighs for jumping. Enjoy a fried bird and you can admire its piercing eyes or grow a beautiful pair of wings.

Even the weapons you use are actually ancient kitchen utensils. You choose what your character creation specialty is, and it functions like your class, determining what abilities and skills you have access to. Pick up a giant pair of enchanted oven mitts and you can become a fire-resistant close-quarters brawler who can carry others to safety. Wield a massive frying pan and you can block monster attacks as if it were a shield, throw it like a disc, or even taunt your enemies with its shiny surface.

Although the system is deliberately light and streamlined, monster hunts seem to have a lot of tactical depth. Creatures must be tracked in their environment, collecting clues about how they interact with the local ecology, before engaging them in battle. Once combat begins, you can do things like target individual body parts to try to reduce the beast’s abilities or cut off certain attacks, and each of the book’s 40 original monsters has its own combination of traits and behaviors to which adapt.

Given the recent popularity of the Delicious in Dungeon anime and the growing hype for Wild Monster HuntersThis seems like the perfect time to put this one on the table.
