PMDC announces extension of BDS diploma to five years

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has officially decided to extend the duration of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from four to five years.

The decision to align the curriculum with global standards has been communicated to all universities in Pakistan.

In accordance with the new regulations, the fifth year of the BDS program will be devoted to an internship, followed by a year of compulsory work from home. The move brings dental education in Pakistan in line with international standards, where the BDS degree typically lasts five years.

The new program will be implemented from the academic session 2024-25.

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Lahore had already adopted the five-year BDS program, and now all universities in Pakistan are to follow suit.
