How to Disable This Annoying iOS 18 Feature

Apple released iOS 18.1 in October, more than a month after the tech company’s exit iOS 18. While iOS 18.1 brings some new features and bug fixes to your iPhone, like call recordingiOS 18 gave you the ability to shoot videos and listen to music at the same time. This feature could make posting videos to social media easier, but it may not be as effective as you hoped.

Technical advice

Before iOS 18, if you played music on your iPhone and started shooting a video, your music would stop. With iOS 18, you can queue up the right song and start rolling, but I found some issues with this feature.

Here’s what you need to know about this new camera feature and how to turn it off if you don’t like it.

Do I need to enable this feature for it to work?

This setting should be enabled automatically, but you can also find it in Settings. After downloading the operating system, this feature was already enabled. So once you update, you should be able to shoot a video without stopping your music.

What apps does this feature work with?

I tested this feature using the Music, Spotify, and Podcast apps and was able to play music or audio from all three apps while recording video. These are probably not all apps that the feature works with.

Will audio play when taking screen recordings?

Yes. I played audio from the apps listed above and tried to record the screen, and music was also recorded while I was recording the screen. When iOS 18 was in beta, you couldn’t do screen recording while listening to music, but now you can.

What is the audio quality of the videos?

The audio quality of screen recordings is quite good. The sound is quite clear, without much distortion, if at all. If you shoot video and record music at the same time, your audio quality will plummet.

When I used this feature, the music sounded distant and hollow, and depending on the volume of music I was listening to through my iPhone, the sound could be very distorted. Apple writes in the setting’s description that audio is played through your iPhone’s speaker and then recorded in mono using your iPhone’s in-device microphone, which is probably why the quality isn’t is not so good.

On-device microphones can work in environments with little external sound, such as an interview in a quiet room, but they generally perform poorly with more complex sounds or in noisy environments. According to the subtitling company AvaOn-device microphones generally do not offer the same sound capture capabilities as external microphones, which can result in poorer audio quality.

Additionally, recording something in mono compresses the audio elements and can result in a flat, less dynamic sound, depending on the audio equipment manufacturer. Sonos.

If the quality of the music in your videos bothers you, there is a way to turn this feature off.

How to Stop Recording Music in the Background of Videos on iPhone

1. Go to Settings.
2. Faucet Camera.
3. Faucet Record sound.
4. Disable Allow audio playback.

Now when you record a video, your iPhone will pause playing any music or audio until you finish recording.
