Our coldest temperatures yet are on the way

Light showers and sprinkles continue to move through the area as a powerful cold front sneaks in overnight. Temperatures will drop with clear skies Friday evening. Light showers will be possible until around 8 p.m.

A Frost Warning and Freeze Advisory have been issued for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia as we prepare for some of our coldest temperatures yet.

The advisory and warning will begin at 3 a.m. and continue until 9 a.m. Saturday. The overnight lows could result in a new round of warnings and advisories for Sunday and early next week.

The frost warning is for northern Ware County in southeast Georgia. The frost advisory covers northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, primarily west of I-95 and in inland counties near and along I-10.

This evening: the showers stop, the sky clears and the temperatures drop. Interior areas will need to protect sensitive and tropical plants from frost.

Weekend: cold and windy Saturday, then a little warmer and less windy Sunday. Frost advisory and frost warning until 9 a.m. Morning lows in the 30s for most inland areas, 40s along beaches. Afternoon highs in the 50s to the 60s Saturday, and 60s Sunday.

The cold air strengthens over the weekend with temperatures well below season until mid-week.

Record low for Saturday and Sunday: Saturday: 26 in 1959. Sunday: 28 in 1979.

Hurricane season ends tomorrow.

Sunrise: 7:05 a.m. Sunset: 5:26 p.m.
