Kerala grants menstrual leave, Saturday holidays to ITI students

The Kerala government has announced a monthly menstrual leave policy for female students of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), a progressive step to support female students.

Trainees will now be entitled to two days off each month, recognizing the physically demanding nature of many job training programs in which women excel, even in traditionally labor-intensive occupations.

“In today’s era, women are active in all fields, including some of the most physically demanding professions. Considering these factors, the government has decided to provide two days of menstrual leave every month to interns (students) in ITI,” General Education Minister V Sivankutty said.

This initiative follows the previous decision of the State of extend menstrual leave to female students in all universities under the Department of Higher Education, once again demonstrating Kerala’s commitment to student welfare.

More than 100 ITIs across the state will implement the new policy, benefiting a significant number of students.

SATURDAY HOLIDAY FOR KERALA ITI STUDENTS

Moreover, the Kerala government has decided to reserve all public holidays for ITI students. To ensure training schedules remain intact, shift schedules will be adjusted.

The first shift will now operate from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while the second shift will operate from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Although Saturdays are officially designated as holidays, students interested in extracurricular activities, workshop training, or short courses may use this day for these purposes.

This dual decision reflects the state’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and flexible learning environment for ITI students, particularly women, while ensuring that education and professional training standards remain intact.
