Recently, Google Chrome begin testing a redesigned task manager with a tabbed interface and search functionality in its canary version. Microsoft Edge, built on the same Chromium engine as Chrome, can also benefit from this. Here’s how to activate the new Task Manager, which has a tabbed interface and supports dark mode, in Microsoft Edge right now.

Chrome’s new Task Manager has a tabbed interface that divides processes into tabs, extensions, and system processes, making resource management easier. A search bar at the top of the Task Manager dialog box allows users to quickly locate specific processes and terminate them using the “End Process” button.

Main changes in the redesigned Task Manager:

In a nutshell, here are the main changes you might see with Chromium’s new task manager, which browsers like Microsoft Edge, Opera, Brave, and Vivaldi might use:

  • Organized processes: Task Manager organizes various processes into Tabs, Extensions and System tabs.
  • Visible search bar: A visible search bar at the top makes it easy to identify and terminate performance-impacting processes.
  • “End process” button: The “End Process” button is now available at the top, whereas it was previously at the bottom.

There could be other changes under the hood, including performance and usability improvements. Without further ado, if you’re using Edge, here’s how to enable the new Task Manager.

How to enable Chrome’s new upcoming task manager in Microsoft Edge

  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of Microsoft Edge Canary.
  2. Right-click on the Edge shortcut and select “Properties”.
  3. In the “Target” field, add the following command line switch:
    --enable-features=TaskManagerDesktopRefresh
  4. Apply the changes and restart Edge.

Access the new Task Manager in Edge

Once enabled, Task Manager can be accessed via the following steps:

  1. Click on the three-dot menu
  2. Go to “More tools » and select “Browser task managementr”.
  3. You can also use the shortcut Shift+Esc.

Besides the tabbed interface, you can monitor CPU, memory, and network usage to identify performance issues.

Although Task Manager in Edge can be enabled via a command line switch, you are not far from accessing it or seeing it by default with future updates for Microsoft Edge on Linux and Mac also after that Chrome has deployed Task Manager.
