Why PS4 is my favorite PlayStation console and better than PS5

PS4 console
Is the PS4 Sony’s best console? (Sony)

A reader explains why he’s disappointed with the PS5 and yet considers the PS4 his favorite console.

Following my Reader article on my favorite PlayStation video games of the last 30 years, this time I thought I would look at some games that, even if they were originally multi-format or are now, I still associate with PlayStation. But I also want to talk about my top five PlayStation consoles and accessories.

Top 5 games that I associate with PlayStation

5. Grave Robber – The first Tomb Raider game I played was Rise Of The Tomb Raider and it was for the Xbox One. However, I’m old enough to remember seeing a friend of mine playing the game on his PlayStation. I remember being blown away by the T-Rex and seeing them lock the butler in the refrigerator. I also remember the rumors of a perverted cheater who showed Lara in the shower. I’d like to think things have changed since then, but probably not.

4. Tony Hawk’s skateboard – My friends and I played this to death. I don’t really remember if it was split screen or not. I remember we usually played to see who would get the highest score and either the winner stayed or else we would take turns playing.

3. Solid metal gear – I adopted the PlayStation late and I don’t really remember how I got my hands on it. I didn’t have much money to buy new games, but I knew someone who sold copied discs. Metal Gear Solid was one of the few games at the time that I managed to finish.

I replayed it recently and it’s a bit weird in that there isn’t really much stealth and most of the game consists of boss fights. At the time, I thought it was the pinnacle of what gaming storytelling could be, but actually, after my rewatch, it’s cheesier than fondue.

2. Resident Evil 2 – Again, this was one of the few games I actually completed. Before playing the game, I had played the demo version to death, as it came free with the official PlayStation magazine, which I purchased from time to time. I remember being blown away by the graphics, especially the fire effects and environments. I had played a bit of the first game, but this seemed like an improvement in every way imaginable.

1. FIFA 98 and later – I remember my friend had FIFA 98 on PC and I was so envious, because it was on another level than other football games at the time. When I got a PlayStation, I remember my parents giving me the ’98 World Cup iteration for my birthday and having to wait an unbearable number of days before they could play it because we Were on vacation at the time.

My friends and I would go to the local Blockbuster (remember them?) and rent the latest edition as soon as it came out and play it, usually during school holidays. Over the next few years we moved to Pro Evolution Soccer, but I still turn to FIFA (now EA Sports FC) from time to time.

Top 5 PlayStation consoles and peripherals

    Honorable mention: PSVita
The PS Vita didn’t bother me. I had a great time with Tearaway and it was my first time playing an Uncharted game. Ultimately, there didn’t seem to be enough support.

    5. PlayStationVR
I bought the original PlayStation VR cheaply in its later years. Like most, I found it mind-blowing at first and it’s great to show it to people who aren’t usually bothered by video games.

However, with the exception of Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, I didn’t really like many games. I think Sony missed a trick that the PlayStation VR2 was not backwards compatible. I thought games like Iron Man, for example, showed promise, but I found the Move controllers too clunky and games of this ilk would be greatly improved with better controllers.

    4. PlayStation
I don’t have a strong connection with PlayStation, as I wasn’t really into gaming at the time. However, I can’t ignore the impact the console has had on gaming over the years. I kind of wish I could go back in time and check out games like Spyro The Dragon, Ape Escape, PaRappa the Rapper, Tomb Raider, and Soul Reaver, among others, because I feel like I probably missed the boat on play it now.

    3. PlayStation 5
I’m a little hesitant about the PlayStation 5. I was an early adopter and the first few years were okay, with games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure at launch and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. , Horizon Forbidden West and God Of War: Ragnarök coming a few years later. However, most of these titles have been cross-generational and even with PlayStation 5-only games, I’ve had a hard time seeing how they differ from PlayStation 4 games.

    PlayStation 5 Slim Console
Was the PS5 a disappointment? (Sony)

I actually got rid of my PlayStation 5 for a while to get a portable gaming PC because it was better for me to be able to game more. I ended up regretting this short-sighted decision and ended up buying a second-hand PlayStation 5 at a good price 18 months later. This was mainly so I could play Astro Bot and I loved the game. With Silent Hill 2 also exceeding expectations this year, let’s hope Sony can ensure the PlayStation 5’s final years go off with a bang.

      2.PSP
I’ve always been won over by the ability to play games on the go. For me, the novelty never really wore off. In terms of games, I played a lot of FIFA, Grand Theft Auto, Ridge Racer and Tekken. I also used it to browse the internet, listen to music and very occasionally watch movies. As a portable multimedia device, it was probably ahead of its time.

      1. PlayStation 4
For me, the best console produced by Sony, hands down. I hadn’t really started playing the game until towards the end of the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 era, after pneumonia left me housebound for several weeks.
I was an early adopter and while I don’t really remember those early games, you could already see an improvement in quality over the PlayStation 3 games.

Because I had more disposable income at that time, I was often able to purchase a number of newly released games on day one. Having not played much of the original, I managed to finish the remastered version of GTA 5. I also discovered the Uncharted trilogy for the first time.

However, the first must-have AAA release for me was Batman: Arkham Knight, having been a fan of the previous games. The game was absolutely stunning and still holds up well today. I also think it’s a worthy sequel, despite the tank combat.

2018, however, was the year for me where it really came into its own, with the excellent God Of War and Spider-Man releasing within months of each other. And while Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t really impress me at the time, I’ve since re-evaluated my opinion and consider it one of the best games ever made.

The fact that games are still available on the PlayStation 4 shows how great this console is.
