5 Common Christmas Tree Mistakes That Could Shorten the Life of Your Tree

There’s nothing like the pleasure of choosing and bringing home a real Christmas tree to decorate your home during the end-of-year holidays. And even though my kids are now in their 20s, there’s still a certain magic within my home that can’t be replaced by a fake tree.

However, if you don’t take good care of your real Christmas tree, it can wilt and look less than shiny when the big day arrives, when you want it to look its best.

To keep your real Christmas tree fresh for longer and extend its lifespan, we’ve called on the expertise of David Johnson, Technical and Category Manager at The underfloor heating store. He shares 5 common mistakes to avoid to keep your real tree from wilting before the new year.

1. Get the right temperature

Even if you turn up the heat to keep your home warm during the winter, a real Christmas tree will appreciate having the thermostat turned down. “Maintaining the right temperature is crucial if you want your tree to last before and after Christmas Day,” says Johnson. I recommend keeping your home between 64 and 72°F. The warmer or colder it is, your tree will likely dry out more quickly and begin to lose its needles.

2. Choose the right part

Where you position your real tree will also impact its freshness and longevity. Johnson says, “To keep your tree looking its best, place it in a room away from direct blast from your heating sources. »

It instantly makes me think of a Christmas tree next to a real blazing fire. While this may sound idyllic, according to Johnson, it won’t do your tree any favors.

“Try to avoid rooms with radiators or fireplaces emitting high levels of heat, as this will speed up the drying process. Although it’s a popular place for trees, we tend to spend a lot of time in the living rooms, which are often the most heated in the house,” he adds.

Some rooms should be avoided altogether, such as the kitchen, which Johnson says is too hot from cooking steam and heat from ovens. While you won’t necessarily choose to position your Christmas tree in a kitchen, unless you have an open plan kitchen and living room, it’s a good idea to keep it away from the heat of cooking appliances.

As an alternative, says Johnson: “Opt for a cooler area like entryways, hallways, or dining rooms, if available.” If, however, you can’t resist the lure of a crackling fire, be sure to keep your tree a safe distance away.

3. Spin your tree

We all benefit from a little sun, especially during the dark winter months, but your real tree will benefit from a little shade from time to time. “If your tree is near a window or in direct sunlight, it’s a good idea to rotate it regularly to ensure even distribution of sunlight and heat exposure,” Johnson explains. “This will prevent one side from getting too much sun, meaning it will grow more evenly and be less likely to dry out on one side.”

He suggests enlisting help from your household and gently rotating your tree every few days. In addition to protecting your tree, you will also benefit from hidden decorations!

4. Use an air humidifier

A humidifier can help balance the humidity level in your home and help your tree last longer. “Proper humidity levels can significantly prolong the freshness of your tree,” says Johnson.

Using a humidifier can also be particularly helpful if you have central heating which tends to dry out the air. If used during the holiday season, it will prevent the air from drying out and keep your tree looking fresh.

Every little bit helps, and Johnson adds, “A little extra moisture will go a long way in keeping your tree looking its best.” »

5. Hydrate your tree, but don’t drown it

We all enjoy a drink at Christmas, but less is more when it comes to your real tree. “It may be tempting to give him lots of water because of his size, but moderation is key,” says Johnson. “Instead of wetting the base, it is best to maintain a constant water level just below where the trunk was cut. A well-hydrated tree will look succulent, but overwatering can lead to root rot and compromise its freshness.

To help extend the life of your tree, he suggests taking one step once you bring your tree home. “Cut the base of your tree before placing it in the stand. A new cut will expose the tree’s vascular system, allowing it to absorb water more efficiently.

He also advises making the cut at a slight angle to maximize the surface area.
