HALLOWELL, Maine (WABI) – Good news if you’re a fan of Maine’s 207 area code.

This could last for many more years.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has approved a large-scale consolidation of the Consolidated Communications Northern New England Company rate center.

This will consolidate 135 call areas into a single enterprise-wide rate center, allowing telcos to use more of existing resources.

In January 2021, the 207 area code exhaust date was set for this year, but the date has been extended several times.

This effort is the largest to date.

The PUC says this could potentially extend the exhaustion date by decades.

“This is by far the most important step yet in our efforts to preserve Maine’s beloved area code,” said President Philip L. Bartlett II. “Previous efforts by the Commission resulted in an eight-year extension of the planned exhaustion date. This effort could potentially extend that date by several decades.
