How much do cashiers earn in South Africa

In South Africa, cashiers often work long hours, deal with rude customers and spend long periods of time on their feet.

Although the job may seem simple, like everything in life, it comes with its share of challenges.

Of course, a big question arises: Are cashiers fairly compensated for their work?

According to BusinessTechThe retail sector is South Africa’s second largest employer, after the government.

This sector represents approximately 17% of the country’s workforce, with cashiers being among the most visible employees.

But how much do they earn exactly?

In early 2024, the Ministry of Employment and Labor published new sectoral determinations for the wholesale and retail sector, establishing minimum wage requirements.

Based on these guidelines, cashiers can earn between R27.58 and R39.49 per hour, depending on their location.

This translates to a minimum monthly salary of between R5,377.69 and R5,948.99, or an annual salary of R64,532 to R71,387.

Although this figure seems quite low, some cashiers earn more than the South African national minimum wage.

Larger retail stores often have their own internal minimum wage policies, which means cashiers could earn even more.
