Hannah Kobayashi intentionally missed flight in Los Angeles, police say; family disagrees

Family members of Hannah Kobayashi, a Hawaiian woman who disappeared more than two weeks ago, disagrees with a new claim made by the Los Angeles Police Department as part of their investigation.

The 30-year-old Oahu, Hawaii, resident had planned a vacation to see her aunt in New York and flew from Maui to Los Angeles International Airport on Nov. 8, her aunt said. previously told Fox News Digital. She was scheduled to take a connecting flight to New York, with a 42-minute layover at 11 a.m., but she never made that flight. His family doesn’t know why.

Kobayashi’s family said she returned to the airport on November 11, but did not board a flight despite having a detailed itinerary and a hotel room booked in New York. After receiving a series of strange text messages that day, followed by a breakdown in communication, the family reported him missing.

To a Los Angeles The Board of Police Commissioners met Tuesday, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said detectives determined the photographer intentionally missed her connecting flight.

“On Friday, November 8, Hannah Kobayashi, 23, missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York, which the investigation determined was intentional,” McDonnell said, misrepresenting the woman’s age.

“On November 15, our Missing Persons Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation. Detectives diligently reviewed video surveillance and used various investigative techniques to locate Hannah, while her family continued their personal search efforts” , he said, adding that authorities “remain fully committed to locating Hannah.

Kobayashi’s family said they were unaware of any developments in the department’s investigation until they received footage of McDonnell’s speech. In a statement on social media, the missing woman’s sister, Sydni Kobayashi, disputed that Kobayashi intentionally missed her flight and pointed out inaccuracies in McDonnell’s timeline of events.

“Based on the information, surveillance footage reviewed, and information shared with us, here are the facts known to my mother and me: It does not appear that Hannah intentionally missed her flight,” Sydni Kobayashi wrote in a post on Instagram.

“The lack of communication on some important details has left us feeling excluded from potentially crucial developments,” the statement added. “These purported findings have not yet been relayed to my mother and me directly by the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department or any detectives involved in the Hannah case.”

Kobayashi’s family said last week that Los Angeles police had reason to believe she was still in Los Angeles. The LAPD could not immediately be reached for comment.

“However, we remain hopeful and optimistic that the LAPD is doing everything in their power to help us find Hannah,” her sister continued.

Kobayashi’s mother reported her missing on Nov. 11, the day the woman’s phone’s communications with family and friends were cut off, said Kobayashi’s aunt, Larie Pidgeon. Through their own investigative work, the family viewed surveillance footage of Kobayashi from that day with an unknown man near the Pico subway station in downtown Los Angeles.

“Pico station is in a very bad area (and) it was late at night,” Pidgeon said. “It worries us even more because it’s not a place Hannah would go. There’s no reason for her to go to a crime-ridden neighborhood. Even if she said, ‘Hey, I need to go get a room hotel because I’m tired, there are 18 hotels next to the airport… it would have to have two transfer stations to get to this station.

On Nov. 10, the photographer was captured on another person’s social media video at The Grove shopping complex, her family said. Kobayashi charged her phone with an employee at the same resort the next day and had filled out a book club application at the TASCHEN bookstore using her address in Hawaii, her aunt said.

Witnesses told the family that Kobayashi “was in good spirits” and said “she had some time to explore Los Angeles,” Pidgeon said.

But since November 11, no new clues have appeared.

Kobayashi’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, 58, was found dead in an apparent suicide around 4 a.m. on Nov. 24 after jumping from a parking lot, the LAPD confirmed to Fox News Digital.

“We remain fully committed to finding Hannah and supporting the family as they navigate this tragedy,” McDonnell said at the police commissioner’s meeting.

Despite the additional tragedy that has struck the family, Kobayashi’s aunt told Fox News Digital last week that they were “hanging on by a thread but wouldn’t give up.”

Kobayashi’s family said anyone with information is asked to call the RAD Movement hotline at 619-904-0840.
