A Barrie nail salon, the Orillia Recreation Center and a Muskoka-area spa were all recently cited for violations by local health inspectors.

Loving Nails and Spa in Barrie received a compliance order after Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit inspectors found the Bayfield Street spa had three “critical violations” and four “non-critical violations” during a routine inspection on November 20.

According to the online report, the northern company failed to ensure that the sink had sufficient counter space to prepare the equipment for use and reuse, with used equipment that does not was not kept in good condition and/or in good sanitary condition, had single-use equipment. and/or instrument not discarded immediately after use, and having reusable equipment that has not been cleaned and disinfected between each use

The health unit also says the Barrie company failed to ensure disinfectants were used according to the manufacturer’s instructions or, in the absence of manufacturer instructions, failed to follow instructions given by public health.

The report also noted failure to comply with additional infection prevention and control measures as outlined in best practice guidance documents, as well as failure to ensure that a personal services establishment was free from conditions likely to impair sanitary functioning and constitute a health risk. .

A health hazard order was served and staff training was provided, the report said. A follow-up inspection on November 21 found no new or existing violations and the order was rescinded.

The leisure, therapy and lap pools at the Orillia Recreation Center on West Street South were ordered to close last month after a Nov. 27 inspection found all three pools were not compliant with several health and safety guidelines, according to the report.

The facility’s lap pool and recreational pools were ordered to close immediately after the inspector determined a failure to ensure all pool components were maintained in good working order, a defect to ensure that all pumps could be deactivated by an emergency stop button and a failure to operate and maintain the premises free from conditions which could constitute an immediate danger to health.

An inspection during the same visit found that the therapeutic pool at the West Street South facility was also in contravention of several health and safety violations, including: failure to ensure that all components of a spa are maintained in good working order; failure to ensure that all pumps can be deactivated by the emergency stop button; and failure to operate and maintain the premises free from conditions that may constitute an immediate danger to health. It was also ordered to close immediately.

A follow-up inspection on Nov. 28 determined that all violations involving lap pools and recreational pools had been corrected. However, the inspector noted that the therapy pool failed to “ensure that the total alkalinity of the water was maintained between 80 ppm and 120 ppm,” the report said.

Education was provided on site and the three health hazard orders were rescinded, allowing all three pools to reopen to the public.

The outdoor hot tub and spa at Windermere House was ordered to close on November 29 after an inspector found a failure to “ensure that the premises are operated and maintained free from conditions that could constitute an immediate hazard for health,” according to the online report. .

No further details on the matter, including when and if they were allowed to reopen to guests, were reported.
