The state has allocated $9 million for community centers in all 21 counties, officials announced Monday.

The money will be used to expand services, train staff and provide transportation to help underserved areas of New Jersey, the Department of Social Services.

“Community Wellness Centers are crucial resources that provide innovative support, peer assistance, social services, and education about mental health and substance use disorders, all at no cost,” said state Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman.

“We are pleased to provide these grants to help expand their services in historically underserved areas and ensure staff are well supported,” she said.

Funded by the Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, the initiative began this month and will continue until June 2025.

The money will be used in several ways, including providing more competitive salaries for aides as well as providing transportation to life skills training for people with mental health conditions.

“For people suffering from addiction and mental health disorders, it is essential to have access to supportive environments where they can receive compassionate care and be treated with dignity by people who are themselves in recovery,” said Deputy Commissioner of Health Services Valerie Mielke. “This additional funding will make these essential services accessible to other underserved communities across the state.
