Bangladesh unrest: Delhi Police beefs up security around Bangladesh High Commission in national capital

A day after protesters entered the Bangladesh Consulate in Agartala, the Delhi Police increased security around the Bangladesh High Commission in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Authorities reported that additional police personnel had been deployed to the area to prevent any gatherings near the commission’s premises. A senior police officer said security has been beefed up to ensure the safety of the commission, and we are actively monitoring the area to avoid any potential disturbance.

With the winter session of Parliament currently underway, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is being enforced in central Delhi, prohibiting the gathering of five or more people, as confirmed by the officer.

In Agartala, Tripura, a large demonstration took place near the Bangladeshi mission on Monday, where thousands of people protested against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and recent attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

There were reports that protesters forced their way into the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission and allegedly engaged in vandalism. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) has expressed its deep regret over the incident. The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi is expected to lodge a formal protest over the violation at its mission in Agartala.

The attacks on minorities in the neighboring country have been condemned by the Indian government, which has urged the government to take necessary measures to ensure their protection. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke out, saying Das was apprehended without just cause.

The bail hearing of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh has been postponed until next month after no lawyer showed up in court for Tuesday’s hearing. Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote has accused around 70 Hindu lawyers of being wrongly sued in an attempt to prevent their participation in their representative’s bail hearing. Earlier, ISKCON reported that a Bangladeshi lawyer defending the Hindu monk was violently attacked at his home by Islamists and was currently in the intensive care unit.

Das was arrested at Dhaka airport on November 25 for alleged sedition. He is accused of hoisting a religious flag above the national flag of Bangladesh during a rally in Chittagong. Following his arrest, there were reports of increased unrest in the country, including attacks on many Hindu temples and community members.

On Monday, ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharaman Das issued a statement on X, seeking prayers for lawyer Ramen Roy. Lawyer Roy was violently attacked after he defended Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu in court. Following the attack by Islamists, he is currently hospitalized in intensive care, fighting for his life, Das said.

Last month, reports circulated on social media and some news sources claiming that a lawyer representing Chinmoy Krishna Das had been murdered. However, further investigation revealed that the victim, Saiful Islam, was an assistant public prosecutor and had not participated in the defense of Chinmoy Das.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari is currently the spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote. He was detained following protests by the Hindu community in Rangpur, demanding increased legal guarantees for minority populations. After his bail request was denied on November 26, clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement outside the Chattogram court, leading to the tragic death of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.
