Mozambique prepares for another week of election protests – BNN Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) — Mozambique’s main opposition leader called for seven more days of protests against what he calls fraudulent elections, a move that threatens to prolong weeks of unrest that have left dozens dead.

New protests are expected to begin on December 4 and run from 8 a.m. local time until 3:30 p.m. each day, at which time all vehicles should stop, Venâncio Mondlane said during a live broadcast on Monday . He also proposed stopping all flights in the southern African country.

Any further upheaval will compound the economic pain Mozambique has endured since the Oct. 9 vote that extended the ruling party’s 49-year rule. Borders have been closed and port operations halted, while there are fears of further delays to a $20 billion natural gas export project led by TotalEnergies SE.

Mondlane also called for the closure of ruling party offices in the Southeast African country and urged parents not to send their children to school.

Police suppressed the protests with live ammunition and tear gas. An armored military vehicle ran over a woman last week, drawing condemnation from foreign missions in Mozambique, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

At least 76 people have died and more than 3,000 people have been arrested since protests began on October 21, according to Platform Decide, a local monitoring group.

Electoral authorities announced the results of the elections on October 24, which gave Mondlane 20% of the vote and Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo almost 71%. Local and foreign observers have expressed several concerns, including the possibility that the counts were manipulated. Mondlane and the party that supported him challenged the result in court.

The Constitutional Council has not yet validated the final results and suggested last month that it had to do so by December 23.

(Updates with call for ruling party offices to be closed in fourth paragraph. A previous version of this article corrected the date of planned protests.)
