How to drive in Norway in winter

Preparations

Change tires

Change to winter tires or studded tires when weather conditions require it. Winter conditions can occur from early October in the north to November in the south.

Studded tires can only be used from November 1 to the first Sunday after Easter Monday inclusive. In Nordland, Troms and Finnmarkstudded tires can only be used from October 16 to April 30 inclusive.

Don’t wait for the snow to fall to put on your winter tires. Roads can also be icy when temperatures drop below 0°C, even without snow. It is best to leave your car parked until the weather improves or you have changed your tires.

Check that your tires are in good condition with the correct tread depth. The legal minimum is 1.6 mm for standard tires and 3 mm for winter tires. Driving on worn tires can have serious consequences. Don’t take the risk.

Remember to check the air pressure regularly.

Removing snow and ice

Always have an ice scraper, brush and small shovel in your car. Remove all snow and ice from all windows with a suitable tool.Avoid improvising with other tools, as you could scratch the car and the window. If you do not clear snow from your car and do not ensure sufficient visibility, you risk a fine and suspension of your license.

It is actually illegal to drive a car with, for example, heavy snow falling on the roof. Check that your headlights are clear of snow and that your windshield wipers are clean and free of ice.

Make sure you have enough windshield washer fluid and that the fluid is frost resistant.

It may also be helpful to have additional equipment like snow chains or similar tools if you are driving on particularly difficult roads. For trips to the mountains and countryside, pack a bag with warm clothes, blankets and food and drinks, in case of unforeseen problems on the road or in the car.

Make sure your car has enough battery or fuel.

Rental cars

In Norway, rental cars are equipped with winter tires as standard during the cold season. Most rental companies offer everything you need for your car, including winter tires, chains and antifreeze for diesel.
