The biggest week of the initial 12 teams College Football Playoffs has arrived.

But before we get to the conference championship games, including a matchup between #1 in Oregon and No. 4 Penn State for the Big Ten Championshipthe penultimate series of rankings release Tuesday that could determine a lot before the final 12-team bracket is released Sunday.

Michigan shook the PCP with a major victory against rival Ohio State on “The Game” Saturday. With the loss, the Buckeyes are no longer in the championship game, but are still a virtual lock for the playoff field. The question now is who else will join them, Oregon and Penn State. How many teams will make the 2024 College Football Playoff?

The five automatic qualifiers will include the four champions from the “Power Four” leagues – the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC – with the fifth automatic qualifier going to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. The top four teams will earn a seeding between 1 and 4 and receive a first-round playoff bye. The final champion will receive an automatic bid but will have to play a first round match.

If the highest ranked champion finishes the final rankings outside of the top 12 teams, they will be ranked 12th overall.

From there, the remaining at-large teams are seeded 5-12, with seeds 5-8 hosting a first-round matchup on campus against seeds 9-12, respectively. The winners of the first round will advance to the quarterfinals and face seeds 1-4 in their respective bowl games.

The remaining at-large teams will be seeded 5-12, with seeds 5-8 setting up a first-round matchup against seeds 9-12, respectively. From there, the winners of each first-round game will advance to the quarterfinals to face seeds 1-4 in their respective bowl games.

As the College Football Playoff Committee noted, no special provisions will prevent teams that have already competed in the postseason and the bracket will not be reclassified. Once the playoff picture is set, the initial seeding will run through to the conclusion.
