Wren Baker ‘won’t set a timetable’ in head coaching search, refuses to ‘feel rushed’ – Blue Gold Sports

As of Sunday, West Virginia football has been without a head coach following the firing of Neal Brown and it may be a while before players and fans know who the program’s new leader will be.

WVU athletic director and vice president Wren Baker spoke Sunday about the search for a new head coach and said there would be no specific timetable for trying to find his guy.

“I won’t set a schedule because then people start to really freak out when you’re not on that schedule,” Baker explained.

Baker also mentioned that some potential prospects still have to worry about games this season, which affects the schedule. He said he wants to ensure that candidates meet their obligations with their current programs.

“A lot of things affect the timeline,” Baker said. “We have potential candidates who will coach this type of thing in championship games. And so, their availability, they have an obligation to the team that they’re working with to make sure that they’re doing their job there.

Baker compared it to his search for a head coach in men’s basketball. Some candidates, like the one he ended up hiring, Darian DeVries, were playing in the NCAA tournament after the announcement that he wouldn’t bring back Josh Eilert. As for the West Virginia bowl game, it was announced Monday that Chad Scott will be the interim head coach.

Baker also said he “refuses to feel rushed,” although he acknowledges that the sooner he hires someone, the better the program will be in the near future, with the transfer portal window opening soon .

“I understand that the faster we can go, the better position we’ll be in, but I just refuse to feel rushed,” Baker said.

While this may be a lengthy but quick process, Blue Gold Sports will keep you updated with all the latest news regarding this impending search for a new head coach.
