HBO Cable Channels Start Streaming on Max

It’s not TV, it’s… Max.

Warner Bros. Discovery is bringing HBO back into its streaming service (formerly known as HBO Max), adding live streaming of HBO’s cable channels to the Max platform. The rollout began Wednesday for a “small subset” of subscribers on the streamer’s ad-free tiers.

The integration of HBO streams (the new feature is called Channels, aptly) into Max follows Disney’s addition of a ESPN+ tile to Disney+ (with more programming from Hulu) and Paramount integrating Showtime into Paramount+. The move also removes all barriers between HBO and Max’s cable operations; the series of the first is broadcast on Max, and now some users will be able to surf the HBO multiplex channels in the Max application.

The Channels feature will allow Max users to watch live streams of the main HBO channel as well as HBO 2, HBO Signature, HBO Comedy, and HBO Zone. Subscribers with channels will also be able to restart, rewind and fast-forward those streams and, on select devices, switch between channels from their Max app.

The new feature could also help alleviate the “what’s on” problem endemic to streaming, by allowing users to click on an HBO-specific version of a program guide to see what’s live right now instead than scrolling through a multitude of menu screens. HBO’s linear channel programming is already available on Max, but the channels will give users another way to find it.
