Senate Passes Bill to Expand Alzheimer’s Prevention Efforts

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The U.S. Senate recently passed the Building Our Largest Dementia Infrastructure (BOLD) for the Alzheimer’s Disease Reauthorization Act of 2024bipartisan legislation.

The original bill, signed into law in 2018, will reauthorize $33 million in funding per year over the next five years to fight Alzheimer’s disease and support the preservation of brain health. Since its adoption in 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded 66 awards to 45 state, local, and tribal public health departments to help them implement effective dementia interventions.

Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth leading cause of death among people ages 65 and older – with nearly 7 million Americans living with the disease.

“It is extremely important to see that our representatives support us. Our representatives support the 55,000 Nevadans living with Alzheimer’s disease and the 84,000 caregivers who provide care to them because it helps them not feel alone,” shared Benjamin Challinor, Director of Public Policy for the Association Alzheimer’s of Northern Nevada.

The bill now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
