Frigid Weather Ahead for Southwest and Central Virginia: Here’s What to Expect

Approach to the Clipper system and its effects

ROANOKE, Virginia. – For weather enthusiasts, a clipper system generally indicates rapid disturbances, often accompanied by snow or rain. For this go-around, regions located north of Virginia will need to keep their snow shovels on hand. Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York are expected to see the heaviest snowfall, although the southern tip of the system will flirt with Virginia’s borders. Those in the higher elevations of the NRV and Highlands have the best chance of seeing snow showers overnight.

Temperature changes and influx of cold air

Prepare for a noticeable drop in temperatures as the cold front passes. Thursday we will start out in the 30s but temperatures will drop into the 20s in the afternoon. However, we will see increasing sunshine on Thursday. Wind chills will drop to the single digits late Thursday night, with subzero temperatures possible in the mountains by Friday morning. BRRRR! Bundle up!

Windy and windy conditions

In addition to the cold, gusts of wind should make their presence felt. Winds could gust between 25 and 50 mph, adding an extra bite to the cold air and making it considerably cooler. Take precautions when outside and make sure any loose objects around the house are secure.

Looking Ahead: Warming Up

For those waiting for the bright side, the weekend brings good news. As Saturday and Sunday approach, temperatures are expected to rise. Expect highs in the 50s by Sunday, and into the 60s early next week. This warming trend is a welcome change for some of us after a string of cold days.

Precautionary measures

Cold preparation is essential in these conditions. It is wise to keep an eye on your pets and make sure they are not exposed to the cold for too long. Please also monitor the plumbing, as cold snaps can cause pipe problems. And remember, rain chances are getting closer next week, especially next Monday and Wednesday.
