O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFest Fall 2024 showcased advancements in open and intelligent RAN solutions

GOOD, Germany, December 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The O-RAN ALLIANCE (O-RAN) today announced the success of its ninth PlugFest: the O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFest Fall 2024.

O-RAN ALLIANCE co-sponsors the biannual Global PlugFests, organized by operators, Open Test and Integration Centers (OTICs) and academic and research institutes, to enable efficient progression of product and solution development based on O-RAN specifications. Any O-RAN member company is free to participate and benefit from well-organized testing and integrations in a neutral and cooperative environment. O-RAN PlugFests efforts are prioritized by theme to maintain focus on key areas.

Each O-RAN PlugFest advances the development of innovative O-RAN-based technologies and solutions. O-RAN Global PlugFest Fall 2024 attendees demonstrated progress in a variety of areas, including:

  • Open and interoperable RAN performance improvements in combination with intelligent network management functions, based on near real-time and non-real-time intelligent RAN controllers (RICs).
  • Newly developed RIC solutions from vendors, operators and academic institutions
  • Grid energy savings measured according to ETSI energy efficiency test specifications
  • Use open source software to provide RAN functions
  • Automate testing and deliver repeatable and consistent results across testing labs
  • Open Fronthaul point-to-multipoint transport to reduce network power consumption and the number of devices required
  • Multi-operator service management and orchestration (SMO) to improve RAN adaptability, security and resilience for public safety and peacekeeping missions.
  • O-RAN conformance and interoperability testing of products from a growing number of vendors

The O-RAN Global PlugFest Fall 2024 took place across 11 locations, co-organized by 29 operators, OTIC and academic and research institutions. It took place from August to November 2024 in 28 laboratories across Asia, EuropeAnd North America. PlugFest brought together a total of 115 participating companies and institutions, some of which participated in multiple locations.

O-RAN ALLIANCE plans to include details of the O-RAN Global PlugFest Fall 2024 in its PlugFest virtual showcase early next year.
