A step forward in creating a court for Russia in April 2025

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, predicts that concrete steps will be taken in April next year to create a special court for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

He said this at a press conference in kyiv, reports an Ukrinform correspondent.

Berset expressed hope that in April 2025, “we” will be able to take practical steps to launch the work of the special court, adding that good prospects are visible for making progress next year.

He added that this requires the broadest possible support from as many countries as possible.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe clarified that by saying “we”, he was not talking only about the Council of Europe.

At the same time, according to Berset, if necessary, the Council of Europe will also be ready to join in, in particular to develop a framework within which the parties could work.

The official said he could not provide more details so far, while remaining confident that the parties would make progress on this path. The process is currently underway, he assured, stressing that a step forward should be expected.

As Ukrinform reported, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset to discuss the need to create a special court for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
