TL;DR

  • Trusted Places gets a quick toggle to disable the unlock extension.
  • Google will also start letting you choose new trusted places by selecting a point on a map.
  • Instead of having to dig into security settings, you can now find places to trust in location settings.

The tools we use to keep our phones secure are getting better and more convenient to use. Just look at how Google has provided fast and reliable solutions. ultrasonic fingerprint scanning to this year’s Pixel 9 family. But even the world’s fastest fingerprint unlock will still be slightly bulkier than a phone that’s just unlocked when we need it, and that’s exactly where features like Extend Unlock and Android’s support for Trusted Places comes into play. We’ve been following Google’s work recently on some improvements to how Trusted Places works, and it looks like these changes are finally rolling out to users.

Trusted Place allows Android users to set “safe” spaces where they can leave their phone unlocked for extended periods of time. So far you’ve been able to set additional trusted locations without issue, but a problem would arise if you wanted to disable it, requiring you to manually delete all of those location entries. We found evidence that Google was preparing a much more convenient option that would allow you disable unlock extension for trusted places with a simple tap, and now we’re finally starting to see this change become public.

In addition to the simple enablement switch, Trusted Places also benefits from the new location selection interface that we’ve already previewed, allowing you to set up new places by simply dropping a pin on the map.

While using Trusted Places can be helpful in keeping your phone instantly accessible, Google certainly hasn’t made it particularly easy to access, burying its controls deep in the system settings. Rather than continuing to exist behind multiple screens of security options, we also learned about Google’s work to also make trusted locations accessible in location settings. Likewise, this is starting to become widely available as Google releases these latest changes.

Look for all these improvements to start using your phone through Google Play Services in the coming days.
