Ageism is alive and well in the workplace: investigation

Only 2% of those surveyed said they never change the way they act or speak around younger colleagues.

Stereotypes harm older workers and organizations

Ageism in the workplace affects the psyche of older workers, survey finds.

Most respondents (95%) reported feeling that age stereotypes have affected their sense of belonging or inclusion in the workplace. Likewise, the majority of older workers (86%) believe that they are the target of harassment at work.

“When 92% of older employees feel pressured to hide their age or downplay their experience, it’s a clear sign that workplace cultures need to change,” Escalera said. “Age diversity should be seen as an asset and not an obstacle. »

For this change to happen, she argued, the skills and experience of older workers should be highlighted by organizations.

“An alarming percentage of our workforce does not feel valued despite the wealth of experience they have,” Escalera added.
