New Jersey crossing guard struck while walking children across street

A crossing guard was seriously injured after being struck by a car outside Burlington City High School Friday, police said.

The accident happened around 7:20 a.m. while the crossing guard was in a marked crosswalk, Burlington police said. The guard was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton and was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.

In a letter to the school district community, Burlington Superintendent John Russell and the district’s school safety specialist James Flynn said the crossing guard was “escorting our students across Jacksonville Road” at time of the accident.

“Fortunately, our students were able to escape unharmed and were not injured,” administrators said in the released letter. on the district website. “We are extremely grateful for the efforts of school crossing guards to ensure our students cross the street safely. »

The driver remained at the scene following the crash and is cooperating with the police investigation.

Police asked anyone with information or video footage of the crash to contact Detective Anna Czajka at 609-386-0262 ext. 221.

Neither the driver nor the guard were immediately identified by police. The site was reopened to the public shortly after the accident.

“Our hearts go out to those involved in this incident and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and improve the safety of all road users,” Burlington police said in a statement.
