The Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, China’s biggest annual celebration, this time falls on January 29.

Chen called for tighter security measures at key venues and for major events during his tour last week in central Hubei province, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

He also called for increased street patrols to “enhance the public’s sense of safety” through a greater police presence, the report said.

Chen heads the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, which oversees China’s law enforcement agencies. He is also a member of the ruling Communist Party’s elite decision-making Politburo.

During a visit to the Hubei High Court as part of his inspection trip, Chen said judicial efforts should “fully take into account the social harm caused by criminal acts and focus on the real concerns of the population” to guarantee equity and justice.
