Alan Titchmarsh ‘lucky to be alive’ after being tied up and set on fire

Alan Titchmarsh revealed a horrific ordeal as a child, where he was tied to a chair, which was then set on fire.

While playing with his friend Mickey in his youth, the 75-year-old gardener pretended to be a captured cowboy.

The fun and games took a turn when the boys involved real flames in their fantasy world.

Mickey had tied Alan’s feet to the legs of a chair and tied his hands behind him, the TV presenter dragging himself gently towards the hot ashes.

Alan continued: “The rope caught fire, as did the chair legs, but because the timing had not been orchestrated by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the rope did not give way and within minutes the flames were extinguished. are spread to the broken cane seat and licking around the seat of my pants.

The heat was so intense that the soles of Alan’s shoes were melting even as he struggled to free himself from the bindings.

He continued: “I tried to move, but realized that if the chair fell, I would fall headlong into the flames.

“I had to be pulled from the fire by Mickey, who grabbed the back of the chair just as the broken leg collapsed, but luckily before my pants were on fire.” He put out the flames with an old curtain he found at the bottom of a hedge.

It’s unclear where the two boys’ parents were when the dramatic fire happened, but Alan confirmed his mother never found out.

He blamed the smell of smoke on a barbecue and admitted he was relieved he had gotten away with it without worrying his mother.

Now he realizes that he was lucky to escape, more than just a worried and upset parent.

Alan wrote: “I never thought I was lucky to get away with it. But more importantly, Mom never knew.
