J&K Police step up surveillance of digital space to detect harmful content – The Week

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified surveillance of the digital space to identify individuals involved in spreading harmful content, often operating anonymously on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and X.

Around 150 social networks suspected of spreading extremist ideologies, fake news, inflammatory videos and manipulated images are under close surveillance.

Officials warned that violators would face strict legal action, besides offering counselling, skill development and employment opportunities to steer the younger generation away from such ideologies.

Police also called for active public participation in maintaining peace. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant, verify the authenticity of content before sharing it and report any suspicious activity.

Law enforcement officials have stressed that misinformation spreads quickly and can have devastating effects, highlighting the need for collective responsibility in combating false narratives.

By combining punitive measures and development initiatives, authorities aim to create a sense of stability and opportunity among the region’s youth.

Since Article 370, police have intensified crackdowns on individuals using social media to publish content deemed anti-national.

The police also warned the media not to report unverified information that could lead to an undesirable situation.

In the absence of other avenues, social media in Jammu and Kashmir has become an important platform for entertainment, interaction, information and business promotion. Political parties have also used the digital space to advance their agendas.

However, there have been cases where young people have been caught posting content considered offensive. In some cases, young people who posted such content have been detained, counseled and released.
