Rain chances increase, warmer and cloudier

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – We’re giving you the first alert for increased rain chances, warmer weather and an abundance of clouds during the first half of the work week. A strong cold front will bring another cooldown for the end of the work week.

TODAY

There are two main chances of rain today that you need to know about before you start your Monday. The first would be early this morning until mid-morning. Scattered showers are expected throughout the morning commute, particularly inland, but should remain fairly light. Cloudy skies and showers will persist during the first half of the day.

As we head into the middle of the day and into the afternoon, we will likely see some clearings in the clouds. Today we’ll still be looking at mostly cloudy weather with some flashes of sunshine as temperatures climb into the mid 60s.

THIS EVENING

Another round of showers is expected to fall in the area this evening. Scattered showers will develop overnight, keeping the chance of rain at 40%. Expect clouds to keep temperatures mild this evening. We will dip into the upper 50s and lower 60s this evening as scattered showers persist into the early morning hours Tuesday.

TUESDAY

Expect winds to continue bringing plenty of heat and humidity throughout the day Tuesday. Apart from a few showers at the start of the day on Tuesday, the forecast does not look bad at this stage.

After the rain overnight, I think Tuesday will trend drier than initially thought.

The latest data keeps most of Tuesday calm, with cloudy skies and one or two isolated showers throughout the day. With a strong southwest wind, temperatures are expected to climb into the 70s with some flashes of sunshine possible throughout the day.

POWERFUL COLD FRONT

The next big weather event will arrive Wednesday as a powerful cold front brings showers and storms, bringing another cooldown for Thursday and Friday.

Looking at the latest data from this morning, above-surface wind power still looks impressive, which could help promote wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph as the cold front passes through the region. Fortunately, we don’t see a ton of rain fuel, which limits the overall risk of severe weather. At this point, a rumble or two of thunder might be possible, but this looks to be mostly a windy and rainy Wednesday.

On Wednesday, highs will climb into the upper 60s and lower 70s ahead of the cold front. Rain is expected to begin with scattered showers in the morning, but become heavier as the front approaches the area. This cold front will bring a decent amount of beneficial rain to the area with some winds gusting up to 40 mph.

Ultimately, our area is likely to pick up 1-2 inches of rain from this system alone. A few spots could get higher totals. With most of the area still experiencing drought, we do not anticipate any flooding issues.

TEMPERATURE DROP

Once the cold front passes, expect temperatures to drop! Mornings will be in the 20s and 30s for Thursday and Friday morning. Afternoon temperatures will be challenging as we will only reach the upper 40s and low 50s for the end of the work week.

We’ll bounce back into the upper 50s and lower 60s for the weekend before another round of scattered showers arrives Sunday.
