Afghanistan extends Jonathan Trott’s contract as head coach until 2025

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has confirmed the extension of Jonathan Trott’s contract as head coach of the national team until 2025, following a successful 2.5-year tenure. Trott’s leadership played a key role in the team’s growth and contributed significantly to Afghanistan’s cricketing achievements during his tenure.

The Afghan national team has made greater achievements in the last two years and Mr. Trott has been part of these achievements, including in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup, where Afghanistan achieved impressive victories against formidable opponents such as England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands and as a result, the national team placed among the top eight teams at the event, enabling the Afghanistan to qualify for its first ever ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

Additionally, the national team won five matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024, triumphing over strong teams like New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh. They eventually reached the semi-finals of the event for the first time in their cricketing history, and Jonathan Trott contributed well to that journey. The Afghanistan Cricket Board wished Mr. Jonathon Trott the best of luck for his next year’s tenure with AfghanAtalan as he strives to further elevate Afghan cricket on the world stage.

Afghanistan are currently touring Zimbabwe for an all-format series comprising three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches. During the tour, Mr. Jonathan Trott will accompany the team only in the ODIs, while he will remain unavailable for the T20Is and Test matches due to his personal commitments. Hamid Hassan will assume the role of head coach in Trott’s absence, and Nawroz Mangal, who recently helped Abdalyan’s Afghanistan team to Emerging Asian Cup glory, will serve as head coach assistant during the series.
