Sustainable Christmas shopping guide: Fashion editor Bay Garnett explains how to find unique and chic gifts

Few people know London’s second-hand and vintage scene as well as Bay Garnett. The fashion author and stylist is the city’s best-known “fronder” and a staunch advocate of sustainable style. So who better to guide you on how to shop smarter this Christmas? From charity shops worth visiting, to better-for-the-planet boutiques and independent labels to know about – and how not shopping – these are Bay’s rules for finding truly unique gifts.

Pay attention and you’ll be at the top of everyone’s nice list for 2025…

If I’m staying with people, I make a real effort to give them something great, because I think it makes them feel special. I try to buy them vintage because then they are a unique piece. It’s always a gamble, but if it’s a good friend, it usually pays off and they’ll probably love it! So it could be a belt or a bag, something that doesn’t need to be sized.

My hidden gems for the best unique gifts are…

I love Chelsea British Red Cross, they’re a real favourite, as well as World’s End, Fulham. I would look for a great photo – it’s a fun gift. Or I would go to Portobello Market on Friday morning because you can get some very special gifts. I also love Santa Maria Novella: their diffusers are awesome, everything about them is awesome, actually!

Only buy gifts that bring you joy

If you get distracted by something you like while shopping, the person you’re shopping for will probably like it too. I think you have to enjoy it – it’s always important that you also enjoy something you’re giving away.
