Airbnb moved me to a rental in a dangerous area

Question : I had booked a long-term Airbnb in Washington, DC, but my host canceled. Airbnb helped me book another location with a slight discount.

I was visiting the new neighborhood a few days ago when I realized it was in a really dangerous area, with extremely high murder and car theft rates, as well as news articles mentioning my name in their Street.

I brought this up with Airbnb support staff and got the response that Airbnb doesn’t really care about locality, just location.

There have been several murders on my street and I can’t park there. I have to park on the street, so the locality is important because I have to drive through it every day.

I don’t feel safe and really want a refund. I don’t think it’s fair for Airbnb to offer a place like this. I also don’t think Airbnb should have sent me this ad after my first rental failed. Can you help me?

A: Airbnb should not have offered you a rental in a high-crime area. According to its published policy, if your host cancels, they will help you find “similar accommodations.” But it wasn’t a similar place.

But this is where things went wrong. An Airbnb representative offered to accommodate you and you accepted the new rental. You could have researched neighborhood statistics and crime before saying yes, not after.

Some Airbnb apartments will only disclose the address after rental. It’s very good. I think if you had said something shortly after choosing the new place, Airbnb could have helped you. Some Airbnbs have a generous cancellation policy, which would have allowed you to cancel and receive a full refund.
