Manitoba Weather: Deep Frost Forecast

Another day, another round of snow falls in southern Manitoba on Tuesday – all before the first deep, sustained frost of the season sets in this evening.

After Winnipeg received up to 20 cm of snow in parts of the city on Sunday and Monday, up to 5 cm of snow could fall today.

Snowfall amounts forecast are similar across the rest of the Red River Valley. Smaller amounts, closer to 2 cm, are expected in southwestern and northwestern Ontario.

Strong northerly winds will cause blowing snow this afternoon in Brandon and the southwest and this evening in Winnipeg, the Red River Valley and southern Interlake.

These strong northerly winds will also bring a blast of frigid arctic air to southern Manitoba this evening.

Overnight lows will fall into the mid-minus 20s in Winnipeg and the southeast. Even colder temperatures are expected in Brandon and the southwest, with temperatures reaching -30 degrees.

Environment and Climate Change Canada expects extreme cold warnings will likely be issued this evening for some areas.

Then we’ll need to prepare for a few very cold days and nights Wednesday and Thursday in the south.

The counterpart is that the sun will shine under the high Arctic pressures.

As northerly winds move across northern areas this afternoon, temperatures will drop there first this afternoon.

Many northern communities will experience a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. Pockets of snow will fall around Norway House, Churchill and Gillam.

Temperatures will moderate in the south on Friday before rising above normal by the weekend.
