Broadway’s ‘Swept Away’ Extends Run After Closing Announcement

Broadway musical Swept will extend its broadcast until December 29, producers announced Tuesday, citing an increase in ticket sales following the initial announcement that the show would end this week.

With a score by the Avett brothers, Swept initially announced that it would close after just 32 regular performances, setting its final day for December 15. In an onstage announcement after the show on Tuesday, December 11, actor Stark Sands announced that the broadcast would extend until the end of the month following the request for tickets.

“The story we tell is about the will to survive despite incredible odds,” Sands told the crowd. “Last week it was announced that Swept was going to close and then something happened. We arrived at work the next day and went to a house that was completely sold. And then the next day it happened again and then it happened again… I’ve never seen that before; we have never felt like this… So I am happy to announce that Swept will be extended for two additional weeks. The race now runs until December 29.

A press release sent after Sands’ announcement called ticket sales “unprecedented demand.”

The show, which is about a shipwreck and the crew’s struggle to survive in the aftermath, received the Critic’s Pick award from New York Times but mixed reviews elsewhere. The musical began previews on Broadway on October 29 and opened at the Longacre Theater on Tuesday, November 19.

The two-week extension offers a bright spot amid continued reports of prohibitive operating costs on Broadway, making it difficult to keep a struggling show open. Elton John’s new musical Tammy Fayefor example, closed its doors on December 8 after opening on Broadway on November 14.

The Broadway Cast Taping of Swept The digital release is scheduled for February 7, 2025. The show features music and lyrics by the Avett Brothers and is produced by Brian Usifer, Chris Miller, Will Van Dyke and Madison Wells Live.
