Jenny Packham’s Amsterdam Guide: The Pulitzer Hotel and Vintage Shops

When were you last in Amsterdam?

This November, to celebrate the launch of my Christmas tree collaboration with The Pulitzer Hotel. The tree has found its home in the hotel garden, a hidden gem within the bustling city. We celebrated the occasion with a stunning candlelit dinner in the Saxenburg Room, a space imbued with the grandeur of the Gilded Age. Under its shimmering chandelier and surrounded by walls adorned with Dutch heritage, we enjoyed a feast that perfectly captured the magic of the season. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, really comes alive during the holiday season.

My lasting memory of the city is…

Allowing me to deliberately get lost in the characterful neighborhoods of Jordaan and Nine Streets. There is something poetic about wandering these quaint streets, discovering hidden gems and embracing the city’s mix of history and modernity. At night, the canals reflect a constellation of city lights, creating an almost ethereal beauty. I love how the locals effortlessly glide down the cobblestone streets on their iconic upright bikes. It’s a city that balances serenity and energy so easily.

The best thing about Amsterdam is…

The fusion of art, history and architecture in every moment. It’s a city where heritage meets innovation, whether it’s a 17th-century building transformed into a boutique or a cup of coffee enjoyed in a cafe that combines old-world charm with modern aesthetics. Galleries presenting Vermeer, Rembrandt or contemporary artists only reinforce this interaction between tradition and creativity.

The best place to stay is…

The Pulitzer Hotel, without a doubt. This hotel is a masterpiece in itself, made up of 25 interconnected canalside houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. It embodies the perfect balance between traditional Dutch craftsmanship and contemporary luxury. Its prime location in the Nine Streets puts you right next to the Jordaan and close to Amsterdam’s most iconic attractions. Beyond its design, the warm and welcoming staff make it a real home away from home.

The best place to eat is…

Jansz is a remarkable choice. Its elegant, softly lit ambiance is the ideal setting to enjoy dishes inspired by modern Dutch cuisine. They excel at presenting locally sourced, seasonal ingredients in the most artful way. For a more plant-based experience, Bonboon is a hidden treasure.

What would you do if you only had 24 hours?

Twenty-four hours is not enough! However, I would rush to the Van Gogh Museum to indulge in its mesmerizing art for a few hours, before having lunch at the cozy Van Puffelen en route to Foam – the photography gallery – inevitably stopping at numerous shops along the way. Plans for the evening would be difficult because there are so many restaurants I would like to go to. Kas’s restaurant is always on my list. A greenhouse style place where most of the ingredients come from the garden.

What do you think is the essential thing to do?

The Van Gogh Museum. In front of Almond Blossom paintings, one cannot help but feel connected to the spirit and genius of the artist.

The Beauty House is a haven of tranquility. Whether for a relaxing treatment or a quick blow-dry, it’s the ideal refuge.

How do you wish your hometown was more like Amsterdam?

There is an undeniable calm that comes from being surrounded by water. The canals create a sense of peace and the reduced dependence on automobiles promotes a more connected and sustainable lifestyle, with cycling at its heart.

My favorite season there is…

Every season has its charm, but December is truly magical. The festive lights, party atmosphere and joy of finding unique gifts in the city’s independent boutiques make it an unforgettable visit.

A hidden gem that I am willing to share is…

The Laura Dols vintage boutique is a real treasure. The selection is impeccable, providing endless inspiration for anyone who appreciates vintage fashion and design.

The only thing I would take home as a souvenir is…

Either a vintage find or a designer piece from The Frozen Fountain on Prinsengracht. The store’s Dutch-designed furniture and home accessories are effortlessly stylish and inspiring.

Where do you like to let yourself go?

Cecconi’s is a favorite for its vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. And the Pulitzer Bar is fun: intimate and beautifully designed, it’s ideal for cocktails.

Who do you call to have a good time there?

A song that reminds you of the place?

A windmill in old Amsterdam. Maybe this song introduced me to the city when I was a child. I’m always looking for mice with hooves!

Comfortable shoes and layers of elegant, muted tones with a few discreet accessories. Amsterdam is chic.

Have you ever had an emergency or notable incident there?

Notable? Yes. But let’s save that story for another time!

A building you would like to live in?

Huis Marseille, the Museum of Photography is fabulous. As I walk through its endless rooms with high windows, I imagine living there. It would be an incredible studio.
