Blinken discussed the need to contain the Islamic State in Syria

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that he discussed the need to continue U.S.-Turkish efforts to maintain the Islamic State in Syria, during a meeting with Turkey’s foreign minister. Hakan Fidan in Ankara.

Syria’s stability

Fidan said Turkey’s priority in Syria is to ensure stability and prevent domination by groups considered terrorists after the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad.

He added that the possible roles of Turkey and the United States in Syria’s future were among the topics discussed.

On Thursday, Blinken told Turkish President Erdogan that the transition must be “Syrian-led, inclusive of all Syrians, protecting civilian life and allowing humanitarian aid to reach those in need.”
