Mazda to freeze investments in Mexico ahead of Trump’s policy

Mazda engine said it is freezing its investment plans in Mexico until it receives clarification on proposed import tariffs that newly elected US President Donald Trump plans to introduce when he takes office in January .

The Japanese automaker said it may revise or reconsider its planned investments in the country, depending on the new US government’s trade policies.

Mazda is on track to produce 210,000 vehicles in Mexico this year, up from 203,000 in 2023. It plans to sell a total of 100,000 vehicles in the country, including imports, with the rest of production exported mainly to America from the North. About 30% of Mazda’s U.S. sales come from Mexico.

Donald Trump said he plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada next year, as part of a plan to encourage companies to “reshore” their investments in the United States. A large number of automakers with operations in Mexico could be affected by the new trade policies, including U.S. automakers. StellantisFord and General manageras well as Japanese and European manufacturers.

Trump also made statements indicating he would tie his trade policy to other areas of concern such as illegal immigration and illicit drug shipments.

The director of Mazda Mexico, Miguel Barbeyto, said in a statement: “We want to continue investing in the country. But it might not be a good deal for Mazda Motor Corporation in the future” – if new import duties are introduced in the United States.

The new Trump-led government also announced plans to impose additional 10% tariffs on general imports from China. The United States already applies a 100% tariff on BEVs made in China and 25% on other products, including steel.

Tom Donnelly, head of Mazda’s U.S. operations, said separately that if Trump’s new tariffs take effect, the company would substitute imports using spare capacity it has at its joint venture plant with Toyota in Alabama, adding “we have a scenario – planning various scenarios for a period of time.”
