Economists expect mortgage rates to remain above 6% next year

Homebuyers hoping to benefit from more attractive mortgage rates next year could be disappointed.

This is what emerges from the forecasts of several housing economists for 2025, most published in recent weeks.

Most of the eight forecasts predict that the average rate on a 30-year mortgage will remain above 6% next year, with some including a higher range of up to 6.8%.

This range would be largely in line with the rate trend this year. The average rate fell to 6.08% in September – a 2-year low – and to 7.22% in May, according to mortgage buyer Freddie Mac. The average rate was 6.6% this week.

“Even by the end of next year, it’s hard to see mortgage rates below 6 percent,” said Mark Fleming, chief economist at First American, who predicts that the average mortgage rate over 30 years will be between 6% and 6.5% next year. .
