Transition committee charts course for smooth transfer of responsibility

The Transition Committee, charged with overseeing the transfer of power to the new administration, has outlined key steps to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer process.

At its second meeting on Friday, December 13, the committee approved the creation of six additional subcommittees to focus on critical areas, including finance and economics, energy and natural resources, law and governance, infrastructure, internal and public security, as well as the social sector.

In a statement released by the spokesperson for the government transition team, each subcommittee will include three representatives from the outgoing and incoming governments. Senior civil servants such as the Head of Civil Service, Head of Local Government Department and Cabinet Secretary will provide support where necessary.

The committee ordered that the submission notes of the different sectors be promptly handed over to the chairmen of the subcommittees to enable them to begin their work immediately.

These subcommittees are expected to submit their initial findings within a week to facilitate the transition process. Outgoing sectoral ministers, agency heads and technical staff will also be called upon to contribute to discussions related to their respective sectors.

Responding to concerns over ongoing recruitments and payments, the committee clarified that the mandate of the outgoing administration officially ends on January 6, 2025 at midnight.

The statement further states that all such activities have been subject to statutory approvals and are considered lawful unless proven otherwise.

“It was decided that any specific allegations of illegality regarding a particular payment or recruitment should be brought to the attention of the Transition Committee for a decision to be made,” the statement read.

The committee also rejected claims suggesting that all ongoing hiring and payments had been halted or required a direct referral to the transition team, saying those reports did not reflect decisions made at the meeting.

Reaffirming its commitment to a smooth transition, the government expressed its readiness to work with the new administration to ensure an orderly transfer of responsibilities on January 7, 2025.
