Under-fire care home to close after Aberdeen council contract

He said the home would close as soon as the council found suitable placements for the residents with other providers.

On Dec. 6, the board gave VSA 13 weeks’ notice to seek new placements.

Sue Freeth, VSA’s chief executive, said the company was committed to finding positions for staff directly affected by the decision.

She apologized to residents and their loved ones for being “unable to care for them to the high standards that underpin our mission.”

She added: “Our priority continues to be ensuring our residents are safe and well cared for while in our care. A new manager who joined us this week will lead the completion of required improvements and daily closure of services. “

Problems at the home were first raised in June when inspectors found the facility did not meet standards of care.

VSA said it responded by assigning additional staff to each shift, providing new tools to support “better care and monitoring of resident needs” and working to fill vacant positions.

He said the Care Inspectorate recognized signs of improvement in October.

However, an improvement notice was issued on December 3 after a follow-up inspection, which exposed issues with medication management.

The Care Inspectorate set out five areas that needed to be addressed, including more effective monitoring of medicines.

Care home staff have also been asked to ensure risks to service users are better recorded and addressed.

She set January 20 as the deadline to make these improvements. VSA concluded that it was unable to meet this deadline.

A new manager has joined the home to manage the daily closure of services.

Aberdeen City Council has been contacted for comment.
