Wolves sack Gary O’Neil after fiery on-field clashes and Ipswich defeat | Soccer | Sport

Wolves reportedly sacked Gary O’Neil when the club was 19th in the Premier League table, after a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich proved to be the final straw.

The 41-year-old, who moved to Molineux after leaving Bournemouth last year, was given a reprieve after suffering a defeat against West Ham in a match nicknamed ‘El Sackico’.

But he only survived a few more days, with Wolves deciding to sack O’Neil less than 24 hours after their agonizing last-minute defeat at home to relegation rivals Ipswich.

Ancient Manchester United chief Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was spotted in the stadium to watch O’Neil’s final match, fueling speculation he could take over, but the Englishman believed he had the backing of the board.

“The people above me support me,” O’Neil said. “But of course the fans want their football club to succeed. I understand that they point fingers at me and it’s my team and I have to take responsibility for it, but when I came to this football club they had only collected (41) points in the. Premier League.

“Since that moment we have managed to do £200m in player sales. We have sold an awful lot of players if you go back to Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Daniel Podence, Adama Traore, Raul Jimenez, Diego Costa, Pedro Neto and Max Kilman.

“And then we don’t buy now in this market, we look for the others who are for the future and who can help us in the present. As we see in the Premier LeagueIt’s a ruthless league.

“The group is doing everything they can to be up to the task. But I’m really proud of them. I know we only have nine points and we’re in a difficult situation in the league, but they’re giving it their all. .So I hope the fans are still proud of the players even if they hate the position we are in.

“They won’t hate him any more than me. I’m here with them whether they know it or not. We won’t give up and we’ll keep pushing. A big game against Ipswich is coming. And hopefully a few – some of the little pieces, our pieces, the pieces of the officials reach us.
