India’s chances of taking the lead in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy fell as sharply as the rains at Gabba on Monday, as the 33.1 overs bowled on the day were completely dominated by Pat’s Australia Cummins. India went to Stumps at 51/4 with KL Rahul and skipper Rohit Sharma carrying the hope of avoiding a follow-up on Tuesday.

India took the last three wickets of the Australian innings for 40 runs, but then lost four of their first five in 17 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal clipped a half-volley from Mitchell Starc straight to mid-wicket while Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were caught in the cordon. Pat Cummins sealed the day for Australia by dismissing 2020-21 hero Rishabh Pant for 9 (12).

Usually, rains are the enemy of a batting team as the continuous breaks hamper the concentration built over many overs. In India’s case, it could be a friend. The weather forecast for the fourth and fifth days of the Test is not much better than for the first three, leaving a draw as a real possibility, and arguably a better prospect than an India victory.

On Tuesday, showers are expected early in the morning between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Monday – 2:30 a.m. Tuesday IST) and then in the evening after 7 p.m. For match timings, 55% precipitation is forecast at 11:00 am local time (5:30 am IST), so we may see a delay in the start of the first session with possible interruptions until lunch. However, Australia would be happy to note that for the remainder of the afternoon, rainfall is expected to be less than 20%.

The results are slightly worse for the match schedules on Wednesday, the last day of the test. There is not much rain expected in the morning and evening, but thunderstorms are likely between 1 and 2 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. IST), which could hamper the second session of the day. Precipitation for this two-hour window exceeds 66% and goes up to 75%. Even at 3 p.m. (10:30 a.m. IST), the forecast rainfall is not much better at 49%.

India would like to ensure that they avoid rain and bat as much as possible. Avoiding the sequel should be the first target. Rohit’s form and the batting depth of Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy would be ready for a big test.
