What steps has Auburn football taken during the first week of the transfer portal window?

The transfer portal has been officially open for over a week and Auburn is one of the most active teams in the country.

Five players have officially signed or announced their commitment to Hugh Freeze and the Tigers, while two others have reportedly signed with Auburn.

The additions came in many areas, helping Auburn revamp its roster as it lost more than 30 players and counting from the 2024 roster.

Quarterbacks Jackson Arnold And Ashton Danielsrunning back Durell Robinson, punter Hudson Kaak and safety Taye Seymore are the five who have made things official so far and reports have surfaced that Auburn has signed the former Virginia Tech Xavier offensive lineman Chaplin and former Miami (OH) corner Raion Strader.

Here’s a position-by-position breakdown of Auburn’s position after a week:

Strategist

Certainly the Tigers’ biggest need in the portal window, Auburn has already landed two of its top transfer targets at quarterback.

Arnold and Daniels were two names to watch for Auburn early on and both made decisions late in their visits to campus. However, the latest wrench thrown into Auburn’s plans at quarterback is Walker White.

White was expected to be Auburn’s only returner at the position after the departures of Payton Thorne, Holden Geriner and Hank Brown, but reports emerged Saturday that he planned to enter the transfer portal.

He hasn’t picked a new school or made anything official yet, but if White leaves, Auburn will need to add another signal-caller to reach the four-scholarship threshold Freeze wants.

Run back

Auburn added a running back transfer during Week 1 of the portal window, signing the transfer from UConn Durell Robinson.

He brings additional experience to the room with Jarquez Hunter out of eligibility. Robinson will likely be Auburn’s only transfer running back barring any roster changes and will join Damari Alston, Jeremiah Cobb and incoming freshman Alvin Henderson.

Wide receiver

Auburn has yet to add a receiver from the transfer portal, but the Tigers are in play for Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton Jr., who is ranked by On3 and 247Sports as the second-best player in the portal.

The Tigers made their top five with Miami, LSU, Texas and Ole Miss. Singleton visited the Auburn campus last week and the Tigers appear to be very much in play for the Georgia Tech transfer who has 1,468 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in his career, so far away.

Receiver isn’t a position of great need with many of Auburn’s young players returning, but the addition of a proven Power Four starter only strengthens the offense for next season.

Another name to watch is LSU transfer CJ Daniels. He played under Freeze at Liberty and Auburn was in the mix for him last offseason. He came last week and could also be in play.

Tight end

Tight end is another position of need for Auburn, but no moves have been made at the position yet.

Kentucky transfer Khamari Anderson and Elon transfer Cody Hardy are two names to watch right now, both visiting Auburn last week. With Rivaldo Fairweather and Luke Deal out of eligibility and Micah Riley now at Texas A&M, Auburn could add several transfers at tight end.

Offensive line

Auburn reportedly made a big move on the offensive line this weekend, bringing in Chaplin from Virginia Tech, but neither Chaplin nor Auburn have officially announced the signing.

If he ends up coming, Auburn had a big weekend right out of the gate, pairing this news with Announcing Dillon Wade to return for one final season. Wade played left tackle for most of last season, but the addition of Chaplin would allow him to move back inside to guard, the position he played at the start of the season.

Auburn will likely add more players on the offensive line, as several visited last week. Right now, Northwestern transfer Josh Thompson and Arizona transfer Wendell Moe Jr. appear to be the top targets.

Defensive line

Auburn will likely look to bolster its defensive line which has lost seven players so far between the transfer portal and expiration of eligibility.

Western Kentucky transfer Dallas Walker IV is the currently hottest name to land at Auburn when he visited campus last week, but he likely won’t be the only player the Tigers sign if he transfers in Auburn.

Buck/defensive end

With Jalen McLeod out of eligibility and Amaris Williams Now planning to enter the transfer portal, Auburn has a hole to fill at Buck linebacker.

Coastal Carolina transfer Clev Lubin visited campus last week and appears to be the top target at the moment. He had nine and a half sacks in 2024 and had the third-highest grade among Group of Five rushers, according to Pro Football Focus.

Linebacker

Linebacker is arguably Auburn’s biggest defensive need in the portal, as Eugene Asante, Austin Keys and Dorian Mausi Jr. are all gone after the 2024 season.

Auburn has yet to recruit anyone at the position, but one name to watch is Fresno State transfer Phoenix Jackson. He visited this weekend and had the third-highest coverage grade among linebackers in the country in 2024, according to PFF.

Cornerback

Corner is a position where Auburn already looks strong for next season, but the reported addition of Strader would strengthen the unit even more.

Strader was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2024 and a freshman All-American in 2023, totaling 110 tackles, 29 pass deflections and three interceptions in two seasons.

If he officially ends up at Auburn, he will join a room that already returns its two starting corners in 2025.

Security

Seymore announced his commitment to Auburn on Mondayadding experience and depth to a room that returns young contributors such as Kaleb Harris and Sylvester Smith. However, she lost a lot of experience with the departure of Jerrin Thompson.

Seymore will join incoming freshmen Anquon Fegans and Eric Winters as newcomers to the room.

Special teams

Punter became a position of need for Auburn following the departures of Oscar Chapman and Gabe Russo. The Tigers added Kaak, a transfer from Oklahoma State, on Saturday, giving them experience and a ready-made starter at punter.

He will join new freshman punter John Alan McGuire at the position.
