Airbnb Bans Parties in Ontario Accommodations on New Year’s Eve and Here’s How It Will Check

If you’re so eager to party that you forget 2024 happened, you might not want to try it at an Airbnb in Ontario, as the short-term rental platform is cracking down hard on stays from the New Year this year.

To prevent guests from hosting what it calls “unauthorized and disruptive” parties for the big event, the brand is relying on a strategy it has used for four years running to stop suspicious vacation bookings as New Year And Halloween.

Special technology will recognize aspects of attempting to book around December 31 that Airbnb considers “high risk,” such as one- or two-night stays in an entire house. All customers will also be required to agree to special anti-collection rules and risk having their account temporarily or permanently deleted if they do not comply.

While these mandates don’t sound like fun, they really work: Last year, some 640 people in Toronto, 3,200 people in Ontario and 5,700 people in Canada were denied stays that AI flagged as too many party potential. And the number of parties reported to Airbnb on New Year’s Eve has decreased by 60% since the company launched these efforts.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear what impact the defense measures may have on people who are genuinely looking to innocently visit another city or town for the evening, although Airbnb says in a press release that customers booking for New Year’s Eve can be “redirected to alternative accommodation on the platform” rather than blocked.
