School safety always a priority for RCAS

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – In light of the school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin on Monday, Rapid City area schools want to assure the public that school safety is always their number one priority.

RCAS Chief Financial Officer Coy Sasse said the district always wants to make sure its facilities are safe for its students and staff in the event of an intruder.

He added that school safety continues to be a major priority for RCAS in its master planning process. Additionally, it assumes that one of the common topics that will arise in responses to the blueprint survey is school safety.

“The ability to have, for example, safe and secure entrances. Entrances that can be immediately locked in the event of an intruder. And so, it’s a priority, I think it will continue to be a priority,” Sasse said.

He said many of the district’s facilities have very modern security protocols as well as panic buttons.
