Is the return of Ariana Grande’s iconic ponytail a sign of a new era?

Ariana Grande may be revered for her insane whistle voice, but she’s also known for her sleek, sky-high ponytail. The famous style has become so iconic that it has become synonymous with Ariana’s image – however, we unfortunately haven’t seen it in a while.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Ariana starred as Glinda Upland in the hit musical, Wicked. For her starring role, she completely transformed her beauty look, ditching the signature bun in favor of several variations of flowing curls and slicked back buns.

Although she wore a wig as Glinda, the star also dyed her natural brown hair blonde to feel more connected to the “good witch” on and off screen. While the world loved seeing Ariana thrust inside her Wicked character over the past couple of years, we have to admit we’ve missed his signature look.

However, on Thursday, she attended the first Golden Globes nomination celebration in California — and we spotted a potential return of the ponytail. The actress channeled Old Hollywood glamor in a satin Christian Dior midi dress designed by Yves Saint Laurent in 1959, complete with a square neckline and pleated skirt. She paired the vintage number with pointy pumps.

For glamour, she called on her go-to makeup artist, Michel Antoine, who created a neutral palette including pale pink matte lips, contoured complexion and long, soft lashes. But who is the mastermind behind the return of the ponytail? Celebrity Hairstylist Alyx Liuwhich slicked the actress’ blonde hair into a high pony with a sleek side part. Although the ponytail isn’t positioned as high as usual, as it sits slightly lower, it still draws on Ariana’s distinctive look.

The actress originally wore her locks this way to cover her bleached and damaged hair. In a lengthy Facebook post from 2014, she spoke out after speculation about her hair loss while starring on the Nickelodeon show: Sam and Cat.

She revealed: “I had to bleach my hair and dye it red every two weeks for the first 4 years of playing Cat… as one would assume, it completely ruined my hair. I now wear a wig on Sam & Cat. My real hair is brown again and I wear extensions but I wear them in a ponytail because my real hair is so broken.” Ariana has incorporated the challenges as part of her personal style, even occasionally incorporating slight variations in length and texture while maintaining the high ponytail silhouette.

On Thursday evening, the star was photographed moving around the room, chatting with fellow nominees, waving her iconic mane. We can’t help but think it’s a sign of a new era for the star’s famous braids. As we all know, trends love to come back.

Through her hair, the pop star makes a major statement. It marks a return to her craft after focusing all her energy on the musical film, but like her ponytail, it doesn’t return in the same way. She recently revealed that while music will always be a part of her life, she doesn’t see herself returning to music and touring for a while and will focus her energy on acting for the next few years. A new era indeed.
